If you've been following the recent news involving local real estate agent Mayra

Velasquez, you've probably seen comments online asking, "So anyone can become a real estate agent?"

The short answer is yes. But there is a little more to the story.

I work in the real estate industry, and I realized that many people don't fully understand how someone becomes a real estate agent or what a brokerage is actually responsible for. This blog is simply meant to explain the process.

To become a real estate agent in Texas, a person must complete the required education, pass the state licensing exam, apply for a license, meet the requirements of the Texas Real Estate Commission, and affiliate with a licensed real estate broker. Once those steps are complete, they can begin practicing real estate.

Many people assume a brokerage carefully screens every agent's character before bringing them on board. That is not how the industry works.

Real estate agents are independent contractors, not employees. A brokerage is responsible for supervising an agent's real estate activities, making sure they follow state laws, complete required education, and remain compliant with licensing requirements. Brokerages often provide training, contracts, policies, and ongoing support.

What they are not responsible for is determining an agent's moral character, personal values, or future decisions.

Passing a licensing exam proves someone understands real estate laws and procedures. It does not tell you whether they are honest, trustworthy, ethical, or a good fit for your situation.

The truth is that this industry is open to people from all walks of life. Just like teachers, doctors, contractors, accountants, and business owners, real estate agents are ordinary people. Some are exceptional professionals. Others are still gaining experience. And, unfortunately, a few make poor decisions.

That is why consumers should never assume that a license, a polished headshot, or a well known brokerage tells the whole story. Take the time to read reviews, ask questions, learn about an agent's experience, and choose someone who has earned your trust.

A real estate license gives someone permission to practice. Their actions are what build their reputation.

Until next time.
