Want to Know Why Good Home Staging Isn’t Cheap? Count the Fake Veggies.

Here’s something most people don’t think about when they see a beautifully staged home: the little things add up.
Recently, I needed to style a large kitchen island with a generously sized bowl. I found realistic fake veggies for about $8.50-$12 each.
One veggie looked ridiculous.
Three looked lonely.
I used 10.
That’s $85-$120 worth of fake vegetables... before buying the bowl.
And that’s just one small detail.
This is one of the things that can be difficult to see from the outside about professional staging. The furniture gets most of the attention, but the transformation often happens in the layers.
A bookshelf may require dozens of individual pieces to create the right balance and scale. A large sofa may need appropriately sized artwork, multiple pillows, lamps and accessories. A large kitchen island may need a substantial centerpiece rather than a tiny decorative bowl.
Individually, these items don't seem expensive:
$35 pillows.
$60 throws.
$80 lamps.
$50 trays.
$150 mirrors.
$200 bedding.
$300+ artwork.

But multiply those pieces throughout an entire home and you're quickly looking at thousands of dollars in inventory.
And having furniture in a house doesn't necessarily mean the home is being presented effectively.
Furniture may need to be edited, rearranged or supplemented. Artwork needs to be properly scaled. Accessories need to create visual interest without making the home feel cluttered. The goal is to make the home feel polished, spacious and appropriate for its price point.
Good staging should look effortless.
But what looks effortless to a buyer can represent hundreds of individual pieces and significant investment behind the scenes.
So the next time you walk into a beautifully staged home and wonder what goes into creating that look...
Count the fake veggies. 😉
